Designer Inspiration: Rag & Bone

In honor of National American Heritage Month and my Native American Heritage, I dedicate this month’s designer inspiration post to Rag & Bones 2011 autumn/winter collection.  Although their initial inspiration was of an Arctic Circle survival-instinct dress code, they mixed it with military influences and a hint of punk-meets-Braveheart references and there you have it, the Rag & Bone boys have created a celebration of culture and individual style; Come on ladies, you can wear it head to toe or just add an accessory or two, but don’t be afraid to infuse a little of bit of your culture into your wardrobe.

Tweed Chic

Oversized blazers are back ladies. They are roomy, functional, non-restricting and did I say fabulous? Today I needed an outfit to play double duty. I am heading a community event out my church so I needed to look professional enough to lead a meeting but I also needed my outfit to be casual enough to run to my son soccer game, which was scheduled right after my meeting. These little wedges made running from the meeting room to the goal line seemless. My scarf played double duty as well, it was warm and added a pop of color to my outfit.

Celebrity Playbook: Katie Holmes's Metallic Top

Looking for a classic look to wear to a holiday party? Take a note from Katie Holmes in her golden metallic top by Lanvin and gorgeous satin wide leg trousers. Not everyone can shop for tops at Bergdofs like Katie but you too can pull off this look by pinning you hair up and pairing a shimmery metalic top (like this one for $36 from romwe.com) with light wide leg trousers (like these currently from Ann Taylor, catch them while they are having a 40% off sale).

Stealing from the Boys

This necktie was calling my name. So I wore it to an informal meeting at my church. Such a playful gesture but I wore it with a some attitude.  I felt artsy and creative but ready for business. It is funny how stepping out of your fashion comfort zone can be fun. I pulled this boyish look together with an untucked white button down and a blue velvet vest that I picked up for $5.99 at New York & Company.

Stocking Up on Rich Fall Colors

Falling in love with the fall colors and looking for a way to add them to your wardrobe this season without breaking the bank?  Start by adding rich fall colored stockings to the mix. They are an inexpensive addition that adds just the punch of color you need to kick your outfit up a notch.  Take a note from Ruche's lookbook.

Football Madness

Looking to rep your team but can't make it to the football game, then throw a tailgate party at work. Check out my team spirit for my Cowboys at the Redskins vs. Cowboys Showdown. We are raising money for charity by showing support for our favorite team. So the next time that you are get the football bug during a work week, throw on your favorite team tee with a blazer or relaxed suit and spread the cheer.

Here is my friend Kelly sporting a cute tuxedo jacket that she picked up from Charlotte Russe. Tuxedo jackets are so good at hiding your trouble spots that I had to ask her to point out her baby bump. How cute is she!!

Suite Style Quota #1

I am happy to announce the Winner of our first Suite Style Quota. The winner is .....Regina from Arlington, VA. She wore a plaid scarf, black tee, coordinating cardigan and a leather jacket to watch her nephew play soccer.  She has set the bar pretty high for soccer mom's everywhere. Her blue plaid scarf was a gift from Scotland and she paired it with a leather jacket to keep her nice and toasty during the game. Not only did she incorporate plaid into her layered outfit but she added another fall fashion trend, Leather.  She is my Style Guru for the week!! Thank you a bunch for participating and I look forward to seeing how working women everywhere continue to meet their Style Quotas.

Vintage Glam Pick

This is a follow up to my previous post: Vintage Glam! Recently, I asked "Which of the 3 dresses listed in my Vintage Glam post did you think I purchased at the NY vintage dress shop, Dusty Buttons?" and you said the green and blue one.

Well Suities, you were right!!!

I fell in love the moment I saw it. Once I put it on, I felt like a character in the TV series, Mad Men. If you do not plan on buying a vintage dress any time soon, but want to get the look than throw on some plain slacks, a patterned cardigan, pearls and twist back your hair like this:

It is so very simple and chic! I picked up this cardigan from Target and slacks from Banana Republic. I felt polished and pulled together. I cant wait to see your Mad Men inspired looks.

Suite Style Quota #1: Layers

Like I promised last week on facebook, we have started a new challenge and here we are with the first Style Quota!  With it getting colder and colder every day, I am happy about our first Style Quota of the season: Layers.  I am so excited to see how you guys will incorporate this new trend into your outfits this week.  Fashion is not just for the magazines, so hang up your work uniform and step out of your comfort zone to meet this weeks Suite Style Quota!

Layering sounds easy but for a curvy girl like me layering can appear bulky, but this seasons layered looks mix up fabrics and colors in a tailored way. Pairing printed or plaid button fabrics with fitted sweaters and blazers, keeping the bulk to a minimum. I have to say that on a cold day, I would normally just wear a big coat or sweater but when living the Suite Life you have to multi-task.  I attended an outreach meeting and then had run to the soccer field to watch my sons game, this layered look really played double duty. It was stylish and professional enough to earn respect and casual enough to wear to the game and earn points with my son. I cant wait to see how you will put the layered looks to the test.

Color Blocked to the Max

I have been trying to color block for a while now because I love the look. However my closet seemed a little bland. So I was happy to pick up this emerald wrap skirt for $4.50 at the Salvation Army so I could pair it with my navy top and heels.

Vintage Glam!!

Description: https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmnEEttXplnG9SjnwBK_WcXc8-Z3tGLN3Togcz1Z9hDXkeAt_SJI1G54vbyQq3SBisVRAmZSp_Z2SlMK0C64Yt4TAu9Ap_CwtIu_m9o7B7L8YuTwVw6G1F-pkPdZ1XrI6jPKkTdDnrf3o/s240/HPIM1653.JPG

I was riding along in my cab in NY thinking about where I could find a great vintage piece and then an news reel runs highlighting this little vintage shop called “Dusty Buttons” on 9th Street.  It turns out there were a few vintage shops on 9th but this one was by far the best.  I love vintage and vintage inspired clothing, so I went in and was floored by the quality and range of their pieces.  I am a curvy girl (around a size 12-14) so most vintage shops do not have many items I could choose from, but at Dusty Buttons I found at least 5 pieces (sized large) at this shop and they were by far highest quality vintage dresses I have come across in a while. The dresses range from $80- $200.

I picked up mine for less than $150 and I love it.  I wore it to work and received an enormous amount of compliments. It is probably one of the most comfortable dresses I own. They sure knew how to cut a pattern back then. Which one do you think I purchased?

Ribbed Flyaway Cardigan

Description: Ribbed Flyaway Cardigan

Even though they’ve been around for a few years, I still like a good flyaway cardigan — and this ribbed acrylic one from New York & Company.  It’s available in black, blue, and white for $29.97 (was $49.95). Ribbed Flyaway Cardigan. I grabed up a brown sleeveless one at Ross for  $29.97.

Satin and Lace throw back

We were bringing back the 20's this Halloween. We had a full house of G rated flappers and gangsters. I love the timeless style of the 20's. I got my creme satin and white lace throw back dress from Banana Republic's heritage collection in their spring sale for $49. My mom's little red number, my daughters Brandy's purplish blue number and my nieces color blocked blue number all came from Ross for under $20.
